Everyone practising in the Netherlands is a member of the Nederlandse orde van advocaten, the national bar, and is entered on the roll of one of its local orders. The title advocaat is protected: only somebody on that roll may use it.

How it started here
The Dutch bar has been a single national body since the Advocatenwet of 1952, which established the structure that still stands — one national order, a local order in each court district, and a public register of everyone admitted — reformed in 2015, when the local orders were redrawn onto the present court districts and supervision moved to the deans. Professional rules, compulsory continuing education and supervision all run through it. What the register does not do is order anybody by anything, which is the gap an independent ranking fills.

The Netherlands has eleven district courts (rechtbanken), each with several locations. Claims up to €25,000, employment, tenancy and consumer cases go to the subdistrict judge (kantonrechter), where you may appear without a lawyer; everything else goes to the district court's civil, family, criminal and administrative sections. Four courts of appeal (gerechtshoven) hear appeals, the Hoge Raad in The Hague is the supreme court, and the highest administrative courts are the Raad van State, the Centrale Raad van Beroep and the College van Beroep voor het bedrijfsleven.
