Law firms in Belgium
Every lawyer practising in Belgium belongs to one of the country's local bars, and those bars sit under two umbrella organisations: the Orde van Vlaamse Balies for the Dutch-speaking bars and AVOCATS.BE for the French- and German-speaking ones. The title is protected — advocaat in Dutch, avocat in French — and only somebody on a bar's roll may use it.

How it started here
The profession has been organised bar by judicial district for far longer than the federal state has had its present shape. The two umbrella organisations were created in 2001, when the former national order was divided along language lines; they set professional rules, run training and supervision, and keep the rolls between them. Admission is recorded by a lawyer's own bar rather than by a single federal register, which is why "is this person a lawyer" is a question answered locally.

93Courts in Belgium
Most disputes in Belgium start at the justice of the peace (small claims, leases, neighbours) or the court of first instance, whose family, civil and criminal sections handle the rest. Traffic cases go to the police court, work and social security disputes to the labour court, and disputes between businesses and bankruptcies to the enterprise court. Five courts of appeal and five labour courts of appeal hear appeals, and the Court of Cassation checks only the law. Brussels has separate Dutch- and French-speaking courts.
